A Journey ThroughCenturies of Faith
From medieval Lewisham to the parish we know today, the story of St Saviour's spans over a thousand years.

Medieval Lewisham
King Alfred the Great held the Manor of Leofshema, the ancient name for Lewisham. In 918, his daughter Elthruda granted it to Saint Peter's Abbey in Ghent, beginning centuries of Christian presence in the area.

The First Mass
Mass was first celebrated in a house on Morley Road on 27 May 1894. After outgrowing three temporary venues, a resident priest, Fr McClymont, was appointed and the parish established.

St Saviour's Opens
Designed by architect Claude Kelly and funded by PJ Foley of the Pearl Assurance Company, the foundation stone was laid on 24 April. Bishop Peter Amigo opened the church on 9 December, with the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs of London in attendance.

The Campanile
The Campanile, crowned by a 12-foot statue of Christ the King weighing 3.5 tons, was completed to mark the centenary of Catholic Emancipation. As Fr Ward wrote: 'The early pioneers of 1893 builded better than they knew.'
